Arnold M. Baskies, M.D., FACS
Dr. Baskies is a general surgeon and fellowship trained surgical oncologist, with 4 decades of training and experience in all facets of general surgery, and has been board certified in this field and re-certified for over 30 years. He specializes in general surgery and surgical oncology. In addition to his pioneering efforts to promote the latest surgical and nonsurgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery (and advanced radioguided techniques) for diseases of the breast, thyroid, and parathyroid glands, he has cared for thousands of patients with all aspects of more common general surgical problems that include hernias, gastrointestinal disorders, vascular disease, laparoscopic surgery, as well as, the treatment of various common and rare cancers, wound healing and critical care.
Dr. Baskies majored in biology at Boston University, graduating with highest honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After obtaining his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine, he completed his general surgical residency at Boston University Medical Center. He also did a fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute, a branch of the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Baskies is board certified, and has been re-certified 3 times, in general surgery, by the American Board of Surgery. He has been accepted for membership to over 20 different societies, which include, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of General Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Eastern Vascular Society, and the American Society of Clinical Endocrinology, among others.
He has been honored on a host of occasions by numerous professional organizations, and he maintains an active role in both regional and national cancer treatment programs. He is a past president of the American Cancer Society of NY & NJ, and the longtime chairman of the Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan for NJ. He has been appointed and has served under every New Jersey governor since 2000 as Chair of the NJ Governor’s Task Force on Cancer Prevention, and is a member of the National Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Baskies has been active and has achieved numerous leadership roles with the American Cancer Society over a span of 36 years. He has been awarded numerous citations for his service to the society, including the St. George Award. During 2015 he served as Chief Science Officer to the Board of Directors of the society. In 2016, he will assume the Vice Chairmanship of the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society.
